THE STORY
Coffee was first introduced to British-colonized Malawi by missionaries during the 1880s. During this time, commercial growing areas were mainly concentrated in Thyolo and Mulanje, in the South. Unlike in other East African colonies, coffee never quite became popular in Malawi. Various factors, including the success of the tobacco industry, prevented the cultivation of coffee from becoming the cornerstone that it is in its neighbors to the North, Kenya and Tanzania. Only much later, after independence, was the potential realized. Coffee production today in Malawi remains fairly low. However, what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. The coffee is grown in the Phoka hills in the Rumphi district and covers an area of 330 hectares of land with 791 registered farmers, the majority of which are female producers.
